Mayo-man Pearce Hanley could sit out the next month of the season after suffering a small fracture in his hand during last weekend’s victory over Melbourne.

In-form Irish AFL star Pearce Hanley could be out for up to a month after suffering a small fracture in his hand.

The Brisbane Lions said scans have confirmed the 24-year-old’s injury, which he picked up in the side’s win over Melbourne on Saturday night.

The Mayo native was expected to undergo surgery last night.

He is expected to miss approximately two to four weeks, according to the club.

“Pearce has been one of our most consistent performers this season and understandably he’s disappointed by this setback,” said Lions football operations general manager Dean Warren.

“His absence however, provides an opportunity for one of our young developing players to gain further senior experience.”

The defender has played 15 games this season, averaging 21 disposals per game and kicking 11 goals in total.

Recent reports have suggested he could be a valuable trade for the Lions and other clubs have certainly taken note of his versatility and form.

He is ranked in the AFL’s top 20 for total kicks.
